Following the introduction of the new Shoto Budo training manual and grading syllabus last year, we are delighted to announce yet another award at this prestigious level.

Hugh Russell, chief instructor at Bearsden martial arts club, was nominated by the Shoto Budo technical director and senior examiner group to receive the award of 1st Meijin.

To acknowledge the occasion, Hugh was asked to give a demonstration of his skills during "spring school", held as usual in the Sport Scotland centre at Largs. Onlookers were treated to a superb display by Hugh, who subjected himself to a lengthy period of attacks by a large and varied group of Dan grades. Hugh was subjected to combinations of continual attack consisting of punches, kicks and grabs and repeatedly disposed of his opponents with skill and style.

Congratulations Hugh, those of us who were there were proud to have witnessed this prestigious occasion.
