Grading
Many people, (juniors and adults) place a huge importance on grading, as a way of measuring progress. To advance through the grading system requires regular attendance and consistent effort over a long period of time. It may be useful to note that over the years, the most successful performances at grading exams tend to be from those who are regular in attendance to courses as well as training sessions. This is often accompanied by an ongoing focus on improvement and enjoyment as much as the desire to pass a grading exam.
As mentioned in the history section, the grading system was developed from the coloured-belt system used in judo. Students are given the opportunity to progress from Novice (white belt) through beginner grades (Kyu grades) i.e. red, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown, followed by Black belt grades (Dan Grades).
Progression is dependant on the student being able to demonstrate a required level of skill, knowledge and ability which is appropriate for them as an individual, as well as being acceptable for the grade level. The grading syllabus is more complex than a grade award for knowing a certain number of kata or techniques.
All adults must grade at one of the many training courses held throughout the year. Those wishing to test for a prestigious Dan grade must attend a full weekend National Course.
